Whole Person Care - the integration of physical wellbeing and mental health - promotes partnership working between professionals to provide holistic assessment and care for those with complex needs.
Common mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety often co-exist with long-term physical health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis and chronic pain. Not recognising these disorders worsens the prognosis of these underlying conditions and leads to poorer quality of life.
Psychiatric illnesses such as bipolar disorder, psychosis and personality disorder commonly lead to impaired physical health, either as a result of a poor quality of life or consequences of medication.
Without acknowledging this two-way relationship between body and mind, genuinely holistic assessment and treatment is unable to take place. This is where Integra Psychiatry comes in. The principle of Whole Person Care underpins our approach to health, and our clinicians and partners have expertise specifically in this area.

My career in Liaison Psychiatry, working at the interface between physical and mental health, has lead to my interest in working in an integrated manner with professional colleagues to ensure that all aspects of illness, both related to the mind and body, are addressed. This principle is fundamental to the practice of Whole Person Care and to Integra Psychiatry.
I completed my medical degree from Newcastle University in 2000 and began training in Psychiatry in 2002 in the North East, gaining experience in number of psychiatric specialities including General Adult, Old Age, Forensic and Learning Disabilities.
I moved to London after gaining my Membership to the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2006 where I worked in both Rehabilitation and Addictions Psychiatry. I also undertook an academic post as a Clinical Teaching Fellow at St George’s, University of London from 2009-2010, where I achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare and Biomedical Education.
I began Higher Specialist Training at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust in 2010 where I further specialised in Liaison Psychiatry. I also had the opportunity to work at both the National Psychosis and Mother and Baby Units, furthering my interest in maternal mental health.
I have worked as an NHS Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry since 2013, leading a diverse, multidisciplinary team in Sunderland Royal Hospital, a service which has won local and national recognition. I have special interests in the management of self-harm, chronic pain, persistent physical symptoms (including functional neurological disorders) and perinatal (maternal) mental disorders, but am also expert in the assessment and treatment of a wide range of mental disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, eating disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), complex trauma and personality disorders.
I am active in medical leadership and until recently was working as an Associate Medical Director at a local mental health Trust. Through this, I have led on a number of innovative service developments which have enhanced the care of the population I serve.
I am an active Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and hold specialist registration with the General Medical Council in General Adult and Liaison Psychiatry.
I hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare and Biomedical Education and remain active in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
I qualified in Medicine from Newcastle University in 2000.

I am a consultant psychiatrist with dual training in both general adult and older adult psychiatry. I’ve been a doctor for over a decade and currently work as a consultant within the NHS, where I hold a substantive post in acute mental health services.
In my NHS role, I provide medical leadership within an inpatient unit and work closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, compassionate care. I’m Section 12 approved and act as a Responsible Clinician under the Mental Health Act, with significant experience in urgent and acute psychiatric care.
I have wide-ranging experience in assessing, diagnosing and treating a variety of mental health conditions — including mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, psychosis, personality difficulties, substance misuse, and organic illnesses such as dementia. My approach is person-centred and evidence-based, focusing on helping people find stability, clarity and recovery during challenging times.
Alongside my clinical work, I have a strong interest in medico-legal psychiatry. I prepare expert psychiatric reports for both criminal and civil proceedings, working with solicitor firms across the North East of England. My areas of expertise include assessments of fitness to plead, hospital disposal, diagnosis and prognosis, and culpability. I also complete Section 49 Court of Protection reports and have extensive experience as a Mental Health Assessor for Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) and as an independent second opinion doctor under the Mental Health Act.
I’m actively involved in teaching and supervision, supporting both postgraduate doctors and undergraduate medical students, and I serve as a Lead Psychiatrist within my NHS Trust.
I currently work as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Responsible Clinician on a 20-bed female acute inpatient unit. In my independent practice, I offer psychiatric assessments, treatment advice, and expert medico-legal opinions for both clinical and legal purposes.
I am an active Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and hold specialist registration with the General Medical Council in General Adult and Old Age Psychiatry.
I qualified in Medicine from the University of Liverpool in 2015.
